Here we have a World War II German Elite camo helmet cover. This is an amazing item in itself in so many ways. It was ahead of its time. One of the first military items to use a coma pattern. Its invention saved soldiers the time & effort trying to disguise the helmets noticeable outline & look.
These German covers never cease to amaze me. Not only by the camo patterns they come in but also by the craftsmanship in which they are made. They are well constructed (form fitted) to the shape of the helmet. Also affixed to the sides and back are U shaped metal hooks attached by small plates that are connected to springs which are sew inside the cover itself. These are used to fasten the cover to the helmet and hold it firmly in place. The condition of this helmet is used shows wear and age.
There are few rough areas a few Broken seams. Its looks as though some of the areas have been repaired and some of the seams re-sewn. I do not know when this may have been repaired. There is also a area that has a small hole but was repaired with a piece of cloth & alot of stiching. This also has additional cloth loops sewn on it for adding foliage. It was part of the William Piper collection. William Piper was the founder & creator of the Piper Cub air plane & manufacturing co. His collection was donated by his late wife after his passing.
