WW 2 German Helmet M35 SE64 4999 NO DECAL BLACK - FORMER SD LUFTWAFFE The reinforced aluminum liner band has round chinstrap bales and is 1940 dated from the F. A former SD Luftwaffe helmet (decal outline visible underneath black paint) appears to have been brush overpainted with black paint. What appears to be whitewash snow camo remnants near rivets and vents. Liner shows some sweat staining and damage to brown area (see photos).
Black paint was also applied to underside rim, very commonly seen with period reissued helmets. Some black paint on liner band All 3 split rivets have single bends with slotted washers intact. The consensus among some helmet collectors is that certain black over painted helmets (especially former Luftwaffe) were used by flak gunners during the war. Flak gunners were under the command of the Luftwaffe. NO LINER STRING, NO CHINSTRAP.
